What is Maker Lab?

Maker Lab is a 75 minute hands-on creative experience for makers ages 5 and up. Each session features rotating “invitations to create,” a thoughtfully curated supply buffet, and a warm supportive environment built for fearless, intuitive making. Clean up is on me! Bring a water bottle and wear mess clothes.

Past invitations to create have included:

-Tiny world building (miniatures)

How Maker Lab is Different:

Unlike traditional step-by-step art classes, where everyone follows the same instructions and is assigned the same project, Maker Lab gives children the freedom to make creative decisions, experiment with materials, follow their own ideas, and a choice to build upon skills shown in class. Oftentimes, each child leaves with something that's uniquely theirs.

Many children love Maker Lab because they often dream up, actualize, and bring home their creations in the span of one class. Their creation might emerge from that day's invitation to create, an idea they've been thinking about all day, or a spark of inspiration that appears the moment they begin exploring the materials.

Not every Maker Lab session results in a finished project, and that's part of the process! Sometimes a child spends the class immersed in the sensory bin, studying posters on the walls, experimenting with materials, chatting about another child’s work, or simply squishing a ball of clay between their fingers. Whatever their pace, Maker Lab is pressure free.

Curiosity driven, judgment free space:

Maker Lab is a space where curiosity leads the way. Children are invited to test ideas, solve problems, collaborate with others, and discover what happens when they follow their own creative instincts. As they explore a wide variety of materials and techniques, they build confidence, develop hands-on making skills, and learn to trust their own ideas.

Process art is a creative practice that values the journey as much as the finished piece. As artist and educator Meri Cherry says, "It's about the making and doing more than the end product."

Where Creativity Comes First

Hey there!

My name is Brynne, and I come from a background rooted in play, creativity, and experiential learning. I’ve spent four years working in early childhood education, with the last three in a fully outdoor, largely child-led environment at Barefeet Farm School (shoutout!). In these settings, I’ve seen firsthand how intrinsic motivation blossoms when children are trusted to lead, allowing curiosity, confidence, and agency to truly flourish.

My own educational and professional path reflects this same philosophy. I attended Fairhaven College at Western Washington University, a self-directed program where students design their own majors. There, I studied Somatic Psychology and Audio Engineering, with a minor in Spanish, honoring my need for variety, choice, and embodied learning.

Since college, I’ve worked as a preschool teacher, paraeducator, live sound mixing and recording engineer, group home caregiver, and facilitator of arts and crafts workshops for kids and grown-up kids across Bellingham. I love bringing accessible, playful projects to adults and open-ended materials to children, then stepping back to witness the magic they create. I’m a passionate advocate for play and process-based art for people of all ages because I’ve seen its power to heal, connect, and transform.
